VET Workforce Blueprint - editorial and accessibility

In 2024, the Australian Government released its plan to develop and support the vocational education and training sector – the VET Workforce Blueprint. We provided editing, proofreading and accessibility services on the Blueprint.

We edited the 80-page draft, applying government style throughout and making suggestions to improve clarity. Consistency was an important focus of our copy editing work. Key messages of the Blueprint – such as the opportunities, actions and goals – were repeated across the content. Our editors also paid close attention to consistency between the main text and the several graphs, infographics, tables and footnotes.

After the typesetting process, we proofread the supplied Blueprint design file and an ‘at a glance’ summary. This included checking design consistency, text flow and that all edits had been accurately taken into graphs and infographics.

We also reviewed the design and structure of the documents to make sure they met WCAG 2.2 level AA accessibility standards.  One of our key recommendations was to add data tables for all the graphs. This gives people who use screen readers an alternative format to access this information. We also gave advice to improve colour contrast. As a final step, we worked with the design file to create accessible PDF and Word versions of the Blueprint for publishing.

This project involved coordinating with 2 other client suppliers, sharing knowledge between our teams, and remaining flexible to manage last-minute changes to the content. You can view the final Blueprint and the ‘at a glance’ summary on the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations website.
