Beaumaris Inquiry report – editing and proofreading services

In 2023 the Victorian Government set up a Board of Inquiry to examine historical child sexual abuse at Beaumaris Primary School and certain other government schools from the 1960s to 1990s. The Board of Inquiry trusted us to copy edit and proofread the report of findings.

The 6-part 460-page report covers past failings of the education system, describes the social and cultural context, and makes recommendations for the future. It also includes personal stories from victim-survivors.

We worked closely with the client to edit the highly confidential draft content in line with Australian Government and client style guidelines. This included taking a trauma-informed approach to the sometimes troubling and sensitive subject matter. To meet tight deadlines, we edited chapters in batches, supplied to us as the client finished writing them. With regular communication and a flexible editing team, we were able to coordinate an efficient editing process and meet the turnaround times.

After the editing and review phase, we proofread the approved content, ensuring consistency across the chapters. We also created a layout proofreading checklist to support the client to do final checks on the design files themselves.

This was a challenging but important project. We were proud to help clearly communicate the inquiry findings to the many stakeholders and interested parties in government and the community. The client praised our attention to detail, improvements to the text, and our timely and professional engagement throughout.
