Climate change is one of the largest global challenges we face as a society in the 21st century. But how do we navigate this crisis in an inclusive way? This year's International Women's Day (IWD) theme – 'Changing climates: Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow' – championed and amplified the voices of women who are working on our response to climate change.

The climate change theme

Climate change will have an ongoing impact on our natural, social and economic environments. This years’ IWD encouraged us to listen to women at the forefront of addressing climate change, or who have experienced its ramifications.

The theme complements the Sustainable Development Goals – a set of 17 goals established by the United Nations. Not only do these goals help to make our planet more sustainable, but they include goals for empowering women and promoting gender equality.

How can you continue to celebrate and champion womens' voices?

Even if you didn't make it to an IWD event, you can do some of these things to show your support:

  • Learn what female climate change advocates have to say on social media or on the internet.
  • Consume women-led media, like podcasts and books, and help amplify their voices and expertise.
  • Support local women-led organisations and businesses, especially those that are fighting climate change.
  • Spread the word! You can continue to share posts about the IWD theme on social media, or you can tell a friend about it.

The more people who support the themes of International Women's Day, the more we can come together as a society to listen and grow.
